Again, not exactly breaking news but i'm jamming it currently so up it goes. Skip it if you just can't get past screamo-y vocals, otherwise this will satisfy your need for an intense listen. I love the propulsive strumming of epic guitar chords and neat-o riffys. The recordings are less than awesome but you can make out all the instruments at least.

Fleet Foxes- Helplessness Blues

This is my little mini-review of the new Fleet Foxes album. You can find bigger and better reviews elsewhere if you need more info.

Overall, this feels like it should've been the first Fleet Foxes release, not the third due to the stripped down arrangements. The album as a whole is way more centered around Robin Peckhold's songwriting and acoustic guitar strumming and less about the other members of the band. Gone are the guitar experimentation and twangy riffs that littered S/T and Sun Giant. There's a weird free jazz saxophone solo somewhere, but that doesn't really count. I walked away feeling like Fleet Foxes wrote this album for my dad's generation, not mine, although the lyrics and engineering definitely improved for this album. Obviously this is a great folk album, the band just went in a direction that I personally don't think was the right one. Standout tracks include "Grown Ocean," "Helplessness Blues," and "Battery Kinzie."

I'm not sure I'm on board with all the Odd Future guys, but I'm lovin Frank Ocean's debut. Just as well produced as anything on the radio, and way more thoughtful. Opening up with a Coldplay cover is a bold move, but it's awesome and works. Not sure I dig the closing MGMT cover as much, but the originals in between rule. Check it out if you want to groove.

I'm pretty interested to see how this album will compare to "Shepherd's Dog," which was a dramatic departure from earlier works. If it's anything like this EP, it'll be more of the electronic experimentation and full band work. I can do without the B-sides, but the title track is great.

Beat music has most certainly arrived as a widely recognized and respected form of musical art. In a time where just about any modern computer has the ability to become a fully functioning recording studio, aspiring hip hop inflected electronic composers are coming out of the woodwork all over the world; sans vocals.

Mike Slott is at the top of the heap.

Theres just something indescribably unique about the glitching, careening caterwaul of sound collage and slinky rhythmic propulsion that his production unveils. This music is equally suited for quiet reflecting with headphones or volume cranking on a scenic drive. I particularly love his unique use, and combination of synthesizers and chirpy, melodic samples.

In short, I listen to this alot, and I think you should try it out.

Sorry for the lull in every bunny activity. I am now moved into my new apartment in Boulder, Colorado and have a renewed enthusiasm for musical pursuits. Stay tuned. I really do mean it this time =]

This an exhausting initial listen to be sure, but at this point I consider it one of the most profound and mind boggling pieces of music ever to be achieved by humans operating electric guitars and a drum set. A lot of comparisons have been drawn with fellow Japanese acts "Ruins" and "Naked City", but I really implore you to put this record on the next time you ever feel the need to analyze and pick apart music. Each song is composed of intricately crafted, run on sentence riffs, broken up by slight improvisation and a mellow jam out here and there. It is an INSANE amount of rhythmic and melodic material to be exposed to in one sitting....it may wear you out, but the experience its definitely worth it.

The main drummer from Bon Iver's solo project. Slow piano or guitar rhythms are supplemented by the occasional handclap or kick drum, but mostly the lilting vocals and simple melodies carry this nice album along. Think of the ambiance of Bon Iver mixed with the rhythmic and arranging tricks from another drummer's side project, Birthmark. A little more variety would have been nice, as well as two or three more tracks, but this is a great start for the songwriter. (Note: Jagjaguwar is quickly becoming the best label out there.)

I'm not supporting pirating good music, but this is just too exciting. Upon first listen, much more straightforward than the last EP, which is disappointing. But it might be a grower. High points include previously heard "Israeli Caves," and "Pigeons," but also "Solid Ground."

One of the best tracks from last year gets a new spin thanks to rising producer CFCF. The melody is intact because it was amazing to begin with, but has some nice bass and guitar to back things up. I love it.

Hey looky here a bass/drum duo....you know how those can be, except this is not like that at all. No sir. Ok for starters, this is a fantastic recording. The bass tone really rumbles yer tummy in a soothing manner. Each drum hit crackles and sparkles perfectly. Oh and the music is real good too. Its not dull and repetitive. Its not noisy or spazzy either.

How do you feel about an experimental RnB album? There are two particularly interesting little facts to state about Muhsinah. The first is that she graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and of Howard University, and the second is that she both performs and produces her own music. She happens to be ridiculously sick at doing both of these things. The opening intro "A.M." into "Construction" pretty much sets the tone for the whole album. Summer's basically here kids. Here's a little package of good vibes to get it started with.

Carson Mcwhirter "Every Body tour EP"

Players: Tony Schatz, Joey Hyland, Andrew Weaver, David Zeidman, and Carson McWhirter

This guy is probably most widely known for his short stints playing bass with Hella and the Advantage, but he is instrumentally multitalented and is involved in writing, recording, and performing with a wide variety of projects. This is a 3 song ep of recordings made for a brief tour by a group of people assembled by Mcwhirter to play under the moniker "Every Body". It rules and has sick ass guitar/piano playing over complex, lurching drum rhythms. I like it a lot. Maybe you will too.

The first song released from the new Phosphorescent album was a feel good romp without much substance, but "Mermaid Parade" gives me my hope back. I need some sadness from a Phosphorescent album. This is a lot like the song sounded live, which could be good or bad. I really liked the stripped down feel of Pride, so I don't know how a whole album of full band songs will turn out. Still hyped though, and I will probably love it.

I had heard one song from this album a while back, "Made Up of Tiny Lights," and was impressed. It was nothing extremely new, but the band did it well. The entire album kind of left me with that impression. There are traces of other recent bands in here, like Surfer Blood, Broken Social Scene, and maybe even a little Built to Spill or Pavement. Singer has a pretty cool voice, but I could see how some would think it's a little annoying. Nothing revolutionary, but a great springtime indie rock album.

Pretty much exactly like his last album, "Shallow Graves," but this guy is a pretty neat songwriter and creative guitar player, not to mention having a crazy voice. There's also a little more layering of instruments this time around instead of just solo guitar. If you like twangy folk songs, give it a shot. Comparisons to Bob Dylan are not unwarranted.
