Bonnie "Prince" Billy- Beware

I haven't actually made it all the way through this album, but halfway through I'm liking it. If you haven't listened to his critically acclaimed previous album "Lie Down in the Light," that is required listening before this album. Will Oldham (the songwriter) has finally figured out how to balance the group background vocals, full orchestral arrangements, and squeaky lead vocals to make a cohesive sound. The folky tendencies of early albums are pretty much gone, and in its place is a more "adult contemporary" feel. I am reminded a bit of Jeremy Enigk's "World Waits" in that regard.

Overall though, definitely worth a listen. The lyrics are awesome and there's some really epic arrangements.

New website to visit!

www.ifyoumakeit.com

They just post videos/songs/albums from up and coming bands. I haven't found one yet that I didn't think was at least moderately awesome. Just start clicking around. I think it's a really cool idea and a place for musicians that maybe aren't quite at their peak to get a fanbase. August Moon is pretty cool, as is Mountain Asleep. Thousandaires are pretty cool if a little cheesy.

RIYL: Daytrotter, but more punk and mathy.

Té- Increasing, If Heart and Senses Agree, All Best Change it is Sly 'in Music'

Japanese post-rock band that is pretty unique. They remind me of El Ten Eleven sometimes and Toe other times, but they are a little more "rock" than both those bands. They get a little funky sometimes... I don't know. If you enjoy faster, rockin' post-rock, then check it out.

Also, look at that title. It makes no sense, it's super long, and the apostrophes around "in music" confuse me to no end. If you figure out what it means, let me know. Every title is equally long and nonsensical. That's how you know it's good.

Ocuban- Behave Decently

This is my roommate's first CD of beats/trip-hop songs and I think it turned out really good. He makes every track flow into the next, and when the next song's beat drops, it always makes you smile. Best used with some sweet subs. Good job Andrew!

Small rant- 21+ venues

So I know I just did a rant, but man, this stuff pisses me off. Holler, Wild Rose!, who some of you may have discovered through this blog, is playing in Nashville at a 21+ venue. they are just losing money on people between 18 and 21, especially in a musical town like Nashville. they don't tour much, so who knows if they'll ever get down south again. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Delta Spirit- Live iTunes EP

Six songs from Ode to Sunshine which I posted on here a while back. This is a really high quality live recording and I like these versions better than the album (for the most part.) I'm posting it on here out of spite of my hatred of iTunes.

Rant- Juno Soundtrack

Everyone loves this CD so freaking much. I hate it. The stupid indie songs are terrible. The lyrics are stupid, not cute. The people can't sing or play their instruments in the least.

Yes, there are good songs by actual artists, but those aren't the ones people like. It's the ones that are SUPER indie just for the sake of connecting with the "indie generation" or something dumb like that. For example, Stephen Malkmus couldn't sing very well, but Pavement was still awesome. This is just an abomination, not to mention an exploitation of people like me- college kids who just want to be cool and different than people that listen to John Mayer all day.

-end rant-

The Tallest Man Alive- Shallow Graves

Do you like sweet finger picking? (yes)
Do you like raspy, twangy vocal lines? (yes)
Do you care that every song is pretty much the same? (no)

The Appleseed Cast- Sagarmatha

Other than the cover art, I'm pretty down with this album. Much more post rock than their previous albums with a little Low Level Owl thrown in. I'm glad they departed from the "rock" sound of Peregrine. Think 7-8 minute epics. Haven't listened to the whole things yet, but sounding good. Engineering is pretty right on as well.
